Every vendor will sell you "zero trust." Very few will tell you that buying a box doesn't make you zero trust any more than buying a treadmill makes you fit. Zero trust is a way of designing your network, not a thing you install.

At its core, zero trust replaces one bad assumption — that anything inside the network perimeter can be trusted — with a better one: trust nothing by default, verify everything, and grant the least access necessary. That principle is simple. Applying it across a real enterprise estate is where the work lives.

Start with identity and segmentation

Before you spend a penny on new tooling, two foundations matter more than anything else: strong identity, and meaningful network segmentation. If every user, device, and workload can still reach everything once authenticated, you don't have zero trust — you have a login page in front of a flat network.

Map who and what needs to talk to what — most organisations have never done this properly.
Segment by function and sensitivity, not by accident of IP addressing.
Make identity the control plane, so policy follows the user and workload, not the cable.

The hardest part of zero trust is never the technology. It's knowing your own network well enough to write the policy.

Then layer, don't rip and replace

You don't get to zero trust in a single project, and you shouldn't try. The organisations that succeed treat it as an architectural direction — applied to new designs, migrations, and refreshes as they happen — rather than a big-bang programme that stalls in year two.

A pragmatic first 90 days

Inventory and classify your assets, tighten identity and MFA, segment your most sensitive systems first, and instrument everything so you can actually see east-west traffic. That alone moves most organisations meaningfully forward — long before any "zero trust platform" is involved.
